Although TikTok is widely regarded as a social media giant, the platform has gradually evolved beyond this category. Over time, the video app has added features such as TikTok Shop, a map for discovering local places, a powerful search function, games, and much more. Recently, hotel booking capabilities were also added, and the company is seeking a fintech license.
It appears that TikTok is taking steps to evolve into what is known as a “super app”—a single platform where users can do far more than just watch and share videos, and where they can meet a wide range of needs in one place.
The super-app model is widespread in China with apps like WeChat, which, in a sense, combines the functions of Facebook, WhatsApp, Apple Pay, and an app store into a single platform. Of course, the question arises as to whether such a model can work outside of China—but that doesn’t mean TikTok won’t try.
Instead of switching between different apps, TikTok is working to become the central app for most of its users’ digital activities. Following its biggest move to date with TikTok Shop, the company—which came under new, predominantly U.S.-based ownership in January—is pursuing the same strategy with its latest developments.
Hotel and Attraction Bookings
Earlier this month, TikTok launched TikTok GO—a way for users in the U.S. to discover and book hotels, attractions, and experiences directly within the app. TikTok GO showcases accommodations and activities through videos, search results, and location pages.
When users find something interesting, they can view details, check availability, and complete the booking.
Instead of redirecting users to external websites after they discover a destination or recommendation in a video, TikTok is increasingly positioning itself as a central platform where viral travel content leads directly to bookings and revenue.
People already use TikTok as a search engine and, in some cases, as an alternative to Google. With this move, TikTok is competing even more directly with Google’s core businesses—search and Google Maps—as the app aims not only to help users discover places but also to facilitate the actual purchase of travel.
Payment Services
A few weeks ago, Reuters reported that TikTok had applied to the Brazilian Central Bank for authorization to offer credit and payment services as a fintech company.
The company is seeking two licenses:
- A license for prepaid accounts, through which users can store money, receive funds, and make payments.
- A license as a direct lender, which would allow TikTok to lend its own capital or act as a platform connecting borrowers and lenders.
This move clearly demonstrates how TikTok is evolving beyond its role as a social media platform into a digital ecosystem. By integrating financial services, the company aims to increase user engagement, tap into new revenue streams, and position itself to compete with fintech startups and e-commerce platforms.
TikTok Shop
It is widely recognized that the launch of TikTok Shop was one of TikTok’s biggest steps beyond the traditional social media business.
TikTok began testing TikTok Shop in 2021 and launched the service in the U.S. in 2023. Since then, the company has successfully competed with Amazon, Shein, and other online marketplaces.
According to eMarketer, TikTok Shop’s U.S. revenue rose by 407% in 2024 and by another 108% in 2025, reaching $15.82 billion. Last year, TikTok already accounted for 18.2% of the total social commerce market in the U.S.; this share is expected to rise to 24.1% by 2027.
Furthermore, TikTok intensified its competition with digital marketplaces late last year by introducing TikTok Shop gift cards. TikTok Shop has also recently expanded into the luxury retail sector, after the platform was initially known primarily for affordable products.
Music
TikTok’s popularity has had a major impact on the music industry and the way people discover new music.
To capitalize on this, the company launched the streaming service TikTok Music in 2023, intended to compete with Spotify and Apple Music. However, the service was discontinued just one year later.
TikTok stated that it intends to focus in the future on promoting music listening and continuing to collaborate with music streaming services rather than competing with them.
TikTok hasn’t completely given up on its music ambitions, though: The company recently introduced a feature that allows Apple Music subscribers to play full songs directly in the app after discovering them in their “For You” feed.
Search and Maps
TikTok has developed a powerful search feature that displays maps, local hashtags, and even reviews to help users discover trendy restaurants, travel destinations, stores, and local experiences.
In addition, dedicated information pages for places and restaurants have been introduced, where users can quickly view opening hours, ratings, price ranges, and other details.
Early on, TikTok began taking market share away from Google’s search business by providing videos with comments and visual impressions of restaurants and locations. In the past, however, users might still have had to switch to Google to find the exact address or additional reviews.
In recent years, however, TikTok has increasingly eliminated this need by integrating detailed location information directly into the app.
Microdramas
Although TikTok is best known for user-generated entertainment, the company is now also focusing on micro-dramas.
To this end, it has introduced both a built-in section called “Minis” and a standalone app for short TV series. These consist of episodes that are each about one minute long.
Since TikTok is already competing with streaming giants like Netflix for users’ attention, its foray into scripted series puts the company in even more direct competition with these providers.
It’s worth noting that TikTok had already taken its first steps toward comprehensive entertainment with live streams and longer videos—a clear departure from its original focus on 15-second clips.
Games
TikTok has also integrated a range of casual games into its app to keep users on the platform even longer and encourage interaction via direct messages.
With the introduction of games, TikTok continues to pursue its goal of evolving from a social media platform into a comprehensive entertainment platform where users can not only watch videos but also challenge friends to simple games.
Conclusion
TikTok is increasingly evolving from a video and social media app into a super app that combines e-commerce, travel, financial services, music, search, maps, entertainment, and games into a single platform. The goal is to keep as many of users’ digital activities as possible within the TikTok ecosystem, thereby increasing both engagement time and revenue.
